Tai O Fishing Village: Built on Stilts

Tai O Fishing Village ~“Venice of the East” that is how this village was described in my Pamphlet for my tour. I have never been to Venice so I was excited to see what this little version was going to show. This was one of Lantu Island’s largest settlements at one time. This town is built on stilts – lending to its comparison to Venice – and the primary income here is the fishing trade. As the fate of many fishing villages its falling victim to modernization and many of the younger generations aren’t sticking around to be fishermen. They are moving to the city where there are better paying jobs. They do still have a nice temple here and the Seafood market is still very popular and that alone is worth a visit. It seems a fair amount of tourist come there which I’m sure is keeping this town alive. The people seem friendly and welcoming and it was a nice change of pace from the fast life of the city but it adds to the charm of all that is Hong Kong.
