This is the Giant Bronze Statue of the Gautama Buddha also called Tian Tan Buddha. Tian Tan Buddha base is modeled after the Alter of Heaven lending to the name of this statue in Hong Kong. They like to be number one in everything in Hong Kong and for a long time this was the largest statue in the world depicting Buddha until 2008. But not to be outdone this is not known as the world’s largest, outdoor, sitting, bronze Buddha (how do you like them qualifiers?) at 112 feet tall and weighing in at about 280 tons. Below the statue there are three floors, the Hall of the Universe, Benevolent Merit and Remembrance. They also claim to have the Relic of Gautama’s cremated remains here for viewing. As part of my tour package with Shoestring travel we were able to go and see the relic. Normally in order to view the relic you have to pay for and leave and offering. Access to the inside of the Giant Buddha has an Admission fee but outside is free of charge. You can access the Buddha by going up the long staircase (268 steps) from the outside but they also have a different access point for those that have special needs where the stairs would not be useful.
Also outside you can see the six smaller bronze statues known as “the Offering of the Six Devas”. Each of these ladies is raising different offerings that represent the qualities needed to enter nirvana. Also located here is a large inscribed bell with Buddhas that rings 108 times a day – once for each of the 108 human vexations.
The grounds near the Big Buddha are remarkable. Great views of the mountains and temples nearby inspire you to get in touch with our spiritual self no matter your religion of choice. This must see (can help but see) attraction on Hong Kong Lantau Island. Go for the view. Go for the fresh air. Go for some enlightenment. JUST GO!
