Wetlands Park: Butterflies and Lady Bugs

Wetlands Park in New Territories is a nature reserve with a tour package through Grayline Tours/Shoestring travel. This is a self guided tour but you do get to meet with a guide that will show you how to use the MTR and light rail to get to the park and they will give you your pass to enter the park and send you on your way. It’s really very easy and the light rail is in one big circle so there is no getting lost and they have a Wetlands Park stop. Once you get off the light rail stop follow the signs and cross the over pass and head to the right and you will come upon the visitor’s gate on the left. Once inside you will be directed to a court yard that leads to a bigger building with displays and info about the many birds and other animals found at the reserve. It’s very educational and great if you want to do something with children. The park is open rain or shine. You can use a poncho if you want to walk the grounds and if you are not prepared for that you can buy some in the gift shop or you can walk through the indoor exhibits. If you are like me and wont let a little crazy weather stop your fun and you do walk around they do have plenty of enclosed exhibits through out if you need a break from the hot sun or heavy rain. I really wanted to go for the Butterfly Garden which because of the rain I was sure it was going to be a bust. Instead I took my time at the many other exhibits in route to the garden and learned about native birds, flowers and insects found around the park. I was happy to find they have restrooms on the paths as well and drinking fountains as the reserve is larger than I anticipated. I did get some great insect pictures of super cute lady bugs and caterpillars and in the Butterfly Garden I was able to get some great shots of a beautiful moth that was not afraid to show off its lovely wings even in the rain. This was a really great stop on my trip and was the last tour of my trip. If you want to get up close to nature while on your visit to Hong Kong get a day pass and stop by Wetlands Park. Don’t forget your camera!
