While visiting Hong Kong Island we stopped by the Aberdeen Fishing Village and took a Sampan boat ride. The boat takes you all around the floating village and affords great views of some of the skyscrapers that line the banks. The village is shrinking mostly due to lack of interest from the younger generations to continue the family business. That area now has houses large boats and yachts of the wealthy taking up that space once occupied by the fishers that had to leave. The contrast of the haves and the have-not’s very striking here. As extra income the fisherman and women give Sampan boat rides and tips are more than welcome. It’s a relaxing interlude in the busy city of Hong Kong and it’s easy to get to, located they’re right next to the Jumbo Kingdom’s pick up and drop off point. If nothing else, ask a taxi (or bus) to take you to Jumbo Kingdom and go to the entrance on the right and the Sampan boats are at the end of the covered walkway. This is a great side trip to do in Hong Kong whether you are there for a short trip or for an extended trip.
