Man Mo Temple: Red, Green and Yellow

The first Man Mo Temple I visited in Hong Kong was located on Hong Kong Island as part of my Deluxe Hong Kong Island Tour (see Shoestring Travel). This temple was built nearly 164 years ago now in 1874 in dedication to the gods Man the god of Literature and to Mo the god of Martial Arts.  Some of the most notable features of this temples décor are the Incense rings. The ring burn for 7days, long enough to supply the ancestor with food in hopes they will answer your prayers and grant your wishes.  The rings are strung up everywhere and it’s really impressive to see. It’s really smoky inside this location too. This is a heavily used temple but we were lucky to look around and take photos on a day when it was light human traffic so we didn’t disturb anyone’s spiritual practices. They also use the red , yellow and green  color scheme artfully  in the interior design. Red is for Happiness, Yellow is for Luck and Green is for Money. There is a strong attachment to these colors everywhere in China and they are used very logically in many place and its outstanding here at this Man Mo Temple. The inner and outer door design is seen here as well. As its thought that some bad spirits can only move forward, incorporating the inner door will keep those spirits from roaming all over the space because they will run into the door and will not be able to move around it because of the directional limitations. The Man Mo Temple on Hong Kong Island is very impressive and highly suggested.
